A photographic series by Hind Bouqartacha
ÉTOFFE is a series of surreal photographic portraits drawn from nearly ten years of my work.
These images were not originally created as a single project.
They were made at different moments, in different places, with different people.
Returning to my archive years later, I began to notice a visual language connecting them: a recurring fascination with fabric, colour, the human figure, and the environments in which I photograph.
I have always been drawn to working outdoors and placing people within landscapes rather than separating them from their surroundings.
The sea, rocks, fields, trees, open skies and empty spaces are not simply backgrounds; they become part of the portrait, interacting with the body and shaping its colours, textures and movement.
By concealing the face, the element we instinctively look to for identity and expression, I wanted to shift attention elsewhere: toward gesture, posture, clothing, colour, texture, movement and the relationship between the body and its environment.
The fabric becomes more than something worn.
It conceals, transforms and sometimes seems to take on a life of its own, caught by the wind, expanding beyond the body, or merging with the surrounding landscape.
The faces disappear, but the figures remain unmistakably present.
Bringing these photographs together after nearly a decade feels like discovering a visual language that had quietly been developing throughout my work, and then choosing to revisit it from where I stand today.
ÉTOFFE is a return to my own archive, a dialogue between the photographs I made then and the way I choose to see them now.
Process note: Original photography with AI-assisted digital intervention limited to the fabric covering the face.
